The sequel to the cult hit Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle Cars (whew) is getting a sequel, with both a name that doesn't stretch to infinity and a promise for continuity.
For those of you who have no idea to what either SARPBC or Rocket League may entail, the premise is extremely simple. It features rocket-powered cars playing soccer, along with explosions. Interested?
Like most good games, it is easy to pick up and difficult to master. SARPBC asks players to pick from a series of different cars that played differently depending on the vehicle. Do you want a fast car? Go for it, but don't be surprised if you get knocked off the ball more easily. Do you want to play as a heavy car? Not a problem, but don't be shocked if you can't catch up to the faster cars. There are vehicles that offer a mixture of both attributes, and it's easy to decide on which one you want to play as, depending on your mood.
Each match is set in a stadium or arena, where two teams of up to 10 players try to score goals on the other team before the timer runs out. Each player starts off with a gauge on the left side of the screen that is commonly called 'boost', which can be collected while moving around the playing field. The boost is where the rocket-powered part of the game comes in, which allows players to go at 'supersonic' speeds. If you go supersonic and smash into another player, you are treated to an explosion that destroys the other player (who in a few seconds respawns in front of their net) and a team that is temporarily without one of its players.
SARPBC rewards those who crave chaos, but within that chaos there is definitely an avenue for those who are looking for skill. SARPBC allows players to use their 'boost' to actually fly for a short period, so a more skilful player could either score that incredible goal (that can be saved and replayed from multiple angles in an in-game editor of sorts) or make a save that provokes cheers and boos from both teams.
Rocket League promises to keep all the things that players loved in the original, along with better graphics, more customization, and an online system that isn't 50% lag. Hooray!
If you are still confused, don't worry. Poor explanations aside, SARPBC is an awesome party game for those who still rock out on their PS3's, and it features a demo if you need further convincing.
Rocket League is coming out on Steam in Spring 2015, along with a possible PS4 port, provided that there is enough interest.
