Risk of Rain 2 took everyone a bit by surprise in March with its Early Access launch. We knew the game had been in development since 2017, but the Early Access release went in with a bang and it has been very well received both critically (Our Preview) and commercially, selling one million copies in one month. The developers also shared a great roadmap so early adopters can know what to expect as they embark on the 3D roguelike lootin' and shootin'.
Today, Hopoo Games has released an update that includes localization support for 10 additional languages, namely Simplified Chinese, Korean, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish. With the game's international success, it seems only natural to add more language support so fans from all over the world can enjoy the game in their native languages. Paul Morse, one of the co-founders of Hopoo Games, said about the update:
We’ve been lucky enough to have the support of fans from all over the world for the Risk of Rain series. It has always been our goal to include more languages and be able to welcome players from all corners of the globe to our community.Localization is indeed an extremely important feature especially for indie games, and some developers such as Nikolay Bondarenko have analyzed the pros and cons involved in a detailed Gamasutra post, which no doubt is very helpful for indie developers. Another story we published today focuses on the great challenges of localization in indie games, showing the story of Lucas Pope's Return of the Obra Dinn and its journey from English to the confines of other languages.
If you've been holding off on picking up Risk of Rain 2 because it initially lacked support for your preferred language, now is the time to purchase it if it's among the languages listed above. The sequel to the 2D indie roguelike shooter seems like an extremely fun romp in 3D graphics and third-person shooter mechanics with all the challenges of a great roguelike experience on top. It's available on Steam for $19.99, and the final release is slated for Spring 2020. For more news, make sure you follow Risk of Rain 2 on Twitter, Facebook, and also the Hopoo Games DevBlog.
