Recently, players have noticed that Rise of the Tomb Raider has received an unexpected (and unannounced) discount. As noted in this Reddit thread, users have seen a price drop from the pre-order price, which for the UK was £39.99. Now that it is launched, however, the now redubbed ‘Standard Edition’ costs £35.99. This sale is also happening worldwide, and is not just limited to the UK.
A representative from Crystal Dynamics has come forward with a statement on the matter:
"We’ve seen some discussions on the content difference between pre-purchasing Rise of the Tomb Raider and the Day One Edition, and would like to clarify. If you pre-purchased Rise of the Tomb Raider on Steam, you received a free download of Tomb Raider (2013), the Sparrowhawk DLC pack, and the Remnant Resistance DLC pack. Each pack includes an outfit, weapon, and card pack. If you purchase the Rise of the Tomb Raider Day One Edition – available until 9 AM PST February 4th – you receive a 10 percent discount and the Remnant Resistance DLC pack. The full download for Tomb Raider (2013) and the Sparrowhawk DLC pack are not included in this offering."
Essentially, the discount is due to the fact that Tomb Raider 2013 and the Sparrowhawk DLC pack are not included in the bundle, despite the fact that apparently in the pre-order promotional material these things were labeled as 'free.'
