We now have a Rimworld Ideology release date, along with patch 1.3. Both are coming very soon. Tomorrow, in fact. Currently, Rimworld patch 1.3 is in public beta, but tomorrow players will be able to play both Rimworld Ideology and patch 1.3. If you want to keep playing 1.2, you'll be able to do so using the Steam beta feature. Basically, all you have to do is right click on Rimworld, click properties, and then select Betas and the branch called version-1.2.
For modders, you don't have to break 1.2 support while adding in support for 1.3. If you want to know more, you can check out this handy document.
Savegames from 1.2 will load in 1.3, (assuming no mods break) and those who purchase Ideology will have non-Ideology savegames load up. However, if you do this you won't be able to customize or randomize your belief system at startup since the game has already started.
What is Rimworld Ideology?
For those that don't know what the Ideology expansion provides, it gives every person in the game a belief system:
Play as piratical nudist cannibals, blind undergrounder mole people, charitable ranching cowboys, machine-obsessed transhumanists, and many more.
Basically, this expansion "is focused around the idea of allowing players to roleplay more." Players will be able to create their own belief systems and then have their colony act it out to see what happens. There are also quests straight out of Indiana Jones where your colonists will break into ancient structures and wade through unknown dangers to potentially nab some ancient treasure.
Just announced are the Gauralen trees, which are interesting because they produce creatures called dryads. Dryads eventually evolve into specialized castes that can be very useful for players. You can choose dryads that will protect your colonists, which is what many will undoubtedly choose. You can also select dryads that will produce wood, sprout herbal medicine, or slowly shed piles of ripe berries to collect.
