Square Enix gave Kingdom Hearts' fans a few surprises and official announcements today to keep them happy. The new Kingdom Hearts 2020 trailer featured two upcoming titles, giving mobile entry Kingdom Hearts Dark Road a release date and officially revealing Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory.
The newly announced rhythm game will come to Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One later this year. The trailer footage showcased Sora, Donald, Goofy, Riku, Kairi, Hercules, Aladdin, but there might be more characters once Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory launches. It is worth noting this marks two 'firsts' for the franchise, as this is Kingdom Hearts' first Nintendo Switch title and first rhythmic game.
Square Enix previously released Final Fantasy Theatrhythm in 2012 so they have prior history in the genre that will definitely benefit the development process. In addition to that, the studio gave Kingdom Hearts Dark Road a June 22nd release date for mobile devices. We actually got to witness Melody of Memory through a leak found on the Dark Road website a few days ago.
Towards the end of the trailer, we get a glimpse of what Square Enix has in store for the future, dubbed "Kingdom Hearts series 2nd Phase." This will include Kingdom Hearts 3: Re:Mind, and the newly revealed Kingdom Hearts Dark Road and Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory. However, there were two empty slots, which could hint towards anything from new entries to remasters.
