Among the news coming from AnimeJapan 2023, Kadokawa revealed an upcoming game dedicated to the super-popular Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World franchise.
The game is titled Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World Witch’s Re:surrection and it's described as a "full-fledged RPG set in a vast world with the characters that appear in Re:Zero."
It's for iOS and Android (because of course it is) and it's part of the celebrations for the 10th anniversary of the original light novel. It'll be published directly by Kadokawa and developed by Elemental Craft under the supervision of the original author Tappei Nagatsuki.
As you may very well imagine, it'll be free-to-play with optional microtransactions. No release date has been revealed, but since the anniversary will happen on January 24, 2024, that may provide some sort of timeframe. You can check out a trailer below.
If you haven't heard of Elemental Craft, you shouldn't be surprised, as the studio is fairly new, having been founded in 2021 by Shohei Shimokawa, a developer previously involved in the creation of Dragon Quest Tact and Logres of Swords and Magic. His profile on the official website of the studio mentions that he specializes in the development and operation of online games that have deep gameplay and can be played over the long term.
Interestingly, the studio is recruiting for developers for the creation of MMORPGs in Unity, so Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World Witch’s Re:surrection may actually be online.
If you're unfamiliar with Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World, it debuted in 2014 with a series of light novels that is still ongoing, penned by Tappei Nagatsuki and illustrated by Shinichirō Otsuka, published by Media Factory in Japan. It gave birth to several manga and anime productions, on top of video games, like Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- The Prophecy of the Throne and Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World: Lost in Memories, which Sega is actually shutting down in May 2023
