Fans of From Software's 2015 action RPG Bloodborne are inviting others to revisit the game this Halloween as part of a special event.

The event's called "The Blood Moon", named for the eerie appearance of the moon in the game. The Blood Moon is strongly influenced in its rules by the yearly Return to Yharnam event, and it runs from October 26th through to November 1st. In a Reddit post, user Durzho outlines the rules of the event, as well as the time period during which players can take part. Of course, there's no reason you can't revisit Bloodborne whenever you like, but The Blood Moon is a good excuse to dust off your copy (or play it for the first time if you haven't).

The rules of The Blood Moon are as follows:

  • Players must create a new character.
  • Players must engage in co-op play at least 3 times before defeating each area's boss.
  • Players must invade at least 3 times before defeating each area's boss.
  • Players taking part in The Blood Moon must carry a torch at all times to demonstrate that they're taking part in the event and not just coincidentally playing the game.
The Return to Yharnam event's rules are similar but slightly different; players must create a new character and engage in co-op and competitive multiplayer, but must also leave a message near the game's lantern checkpoints which reads "you're in the know, right?" as an indicator that they're playing. Return to Yharnam takes place in March, nearer the game's release anniversary, while The Blood Moon is more of a Halloween event in keeping with Bloodborne's horror aesthetic.

In an edit to the post, Durzho also clarified that players should stay below level 120 if possible in order to make co-operative play more viable at all levels for players taking part.

Bloodborne was released back in 2015 for the PlayStation 4. Directed by Demon's Souls and Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game takes the basic structure of those works and places it in a Hammer horror-style setting. You can check out our review of it here. Miyazaki's newest game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, will be released in March 2019.
