PS5 exclusive shooter Returnal is upon us, and it's a pretty brutal experience. If you've been struggling, you'll be delighted to know a YouTuber has stumbled across some Returnal cheat codes you can use to make your experience a little less painful.
What are these Returnal cheat codes and what do they do?
This info comes to us via YouTube channel TheRandomizer, and there's a more detailed breakdown of the Returnal cheat codes the channel found over on Reddit. To use these cheats, you'll need a keyboard. Most PC keyboards will work on your PS5, so you should just be able to plug in your USB keyboard (even if it's just a wireless receiver). Below is a list of all the cheats TheRandomizer mentions. If you feel bad about using these, just think of them as a sort of Returnal easy mode.
- Press and hold Shift and Ctrl, then press Alt - drop weapons (press 1 through 0 to drop different weapons at current proficiency)
- Press and hold Shift and Ctrl, then press 4 - respawn at the ship with loot intact
- Press and hold Shift and Ctrl, then press 8 - respawn at the last place you visited (the beginning of a dungeon or area)
As Reddit user JayTheAverageGamer points out, you can use these cheats to cycle through builds until you find one you're fond of. However, there are some caveats here. It's very, very important that you don't hold the 3 or 7 keys while you're holding Shift and Ctrl on your keyboard. These commands will freeze the game. Pressing the 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, or 0 keys while holding Shift and Ctrl won't do anything, so although it's safe to do this, it is also pointless. Finally, don't use the ship respawn cheat after Returnal's third biome or during its fourth biome. You'll respawn at the first biome with no way to recover your progress.
Are these Returnal cheats safe to use?
For the moment, yes. Housemarque and Sony don't appear to be banning users who are using the cheats, so if you do want to make your game experience closer to the fabled Returnal easy mode, you won't be punished for it. However, a Returnal update is on the way shortly, so make sure that you turn off your PS5's auto-update feature for the game if you want to keep using the cheats, as it's possible the update may disable them. It's also recommended you do this if you don't want to lose your current run's progress.
