In a surprising move, Firaxis Games has announced a new XCOM title, XCOM: Chimera Squad, and it's coming out next week on April 24 for 50% off.
The game's story takes place 5 years after the events of XCOM 2. Humanity has won the war against the Overlords and reclaimed Earth. However, some Aliens were left behind and now both Humanity and Aliens work and live together while forging a "civilization of cooperation and coexistence."
However, City 31--which has become the model for the new, post-invasion world--has those who don't support inter-species cooperation. This means the player can control Chimera Squad, a badass team of Human and Alien agents who work together to identify and disrupt those who seek to destroy City 31.
Each of the 11 playable agents will have their own distinct personality and tactical abilities, which includes species-specific attacks like the Viper's tongue pull.
Missions have been reimagined as a series of encounters that are described as "explosive... intense and unpredictable." This includes features such as Breach Mode, which is a new combat phase that will inject a player's squad right into the action by allowing the player to assign squad members to different entry points and to coordinate the assault with Breach-specific skills.
There will now be an alternating turn order like in the Banner Saga or the Divinity: Original Sin series, which is an interesting change. Not sure how regular XCOM players will feel about that, but it is what it is.
XCOM: Chimera Squad will release on Steam for $14.99 (-50% off until May 1) on April 24.
