Control, the latest game from Alan Wake and Max Payne developer Remedy, launches August 27th. News of the game's release date was accidentally broken by a listing on Microsoft's online store, which was later confirmed by Game Informer.
The game sees players take control of Jesse Faden, an agent for the fictional US Federal Bureau of Control (FBC). The FBC investigates and controls (hence the game's title) supernatural phenomena around the world. Faden gets caught up in an invasion at the FBC's headquarters by the Hiss, an unexplained paranormal force. The Hiss kills the FBC's director and takes over the Bureau's HQ, leading Faden on a quest to save the Bureau and discover the origin of her own unexplained supernatural powers along the way.

Unlike Remedy's previous games which have largely been linear, Remedy says Control will be an open-ended Metroidvania-style experience. The whole game will take place inside the FBC's HQ, the Oldest House, which is far larger on the inside than it externally appears. Despite the localized setting, the game's world map will be large, with various fast-travel points being unlocked as the player makes progress. The combat system is flexible and versatile, allowing players to customize their loadouts using skill trees and an upgradeable weapon for protagonist Jesse Faden. Enemy AI is taking a leaf out of Left 4 Dead's bloodstained book, with an "Encounter Director" dictating enemy interactions based on the player's level and location.
When TechRaptor spoke to Remedy's Sam Lake and actor Courtney Hope about Control back in October, the pair promised a deviation from what Remedy was trying to achieve with Quantum Break. Where that game was "a blockbuster-y mainstream experience", Lake says that Control will be "as weird as it ends up being" and that the game will set up "a big mystery with a lot of questions". Also, if you're a fan of the Old Gods of Asgard sequence in Alan Wake, Lake says that "there will be certain key scenes where music plays a big role...maybe even some singing", so you won't be disappointed on that front.
Control launches for PS4, Xbox One and PC on August 27th. As was recently announced, on PC it will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store.
