Bethesda has announced that the Redfall and Starfield release dates will be delayed until 2023. The studio says Arkane and Bethesda Game Studios, respectively, need additional time to ensure that their games are the best they can be.

Why are the Redfall and Starfield release dates delayed?

In a tweet, Bethesda said that the Redfall and Starfield delays are in order to realize the "incredible ambitions" of both development teams. The games will both be pushed back to the first half of 2023 so as to make them the "best, most polished" versions they can be. In addition, Bethesda says it will share the first gameplay deep dive for both projects "very soon", so it's not all bad news. Still, it looks like Todd Howard and the Bethesda team won't be getting that "sexy" Starfield release date that a former employee described back in April this year.

Starfield looks like a pretty ambitious game.

Given that Starfield is so ambitious, we probably shouldn't be surprised that it's been delayed. According to the aforementioned former Bethesda employee, the game will feature manual spaceflight, which sounds like it'll be a nightmare to implement in a fully-explorable open-galaxy environment. This is a Bethesda game, so there will, of course, also be companions to meet and befriend, although so far we've only met the first of these, a bipedal robot by the name of Vasco. We'll likely learn more about the gameplay features that potentially saw Starfield delayed in the coming months, but until then, we're just going to have to wait a little longer.

What's going on with the Redfall delay?

Of course, it isn't just Starfield that's been delayed. The Redfall release date has also been pushed back to the first half of 2023, with Arkane's multiplayer looter-shooter needing a little more polish before it's ready. Redfall was first unveiled in June last year, and alpha gameplay screenshots of the game subsequently leaked in September. These screenshots show a looter shooter similar to Borderlands; there are heroes with powers, semi-open environments to explore, and loot to gather. Of course, we haven't had any official Redfall gameplay reveal yet, so it's hard to know exactly what form the game will take until Bethesda shows off some concrete gameplay footage.

The cast of Redfall
Redfall was due to launch in summer 2022, but it's been pushed back to the first half of 2023.

Starfield and Redfall aren't the only high-profile projects to have been delayed recently. Highly anticipated projects like The Day Before and the upcoming Breath of the Wild sequel have been pushed back in recent months, with developers usually citing a need to add additional polish as their reason. Let's hope Starfield and Redfall stick to their new release dates and that we get to learn more about them soon. If we do, we'll bring it to you as soon as we get it, of course.
