We're still a few months away from the Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart release date, but there's something to tide you over for now: the Ratchet & Clank: Life of Pie animated short has debuted on Canada's Crave streaming service.

Ratchet & Clank is a classic PlayStation franchise that recently announced its return in mid-2020. The game just got its release date announcement today, but that wasn't the only nice surprise: a Ratchet & Clank animated short has also quietly debuted in Canada, of all places.

Is the Ratchet & Clank: Life of Pie Animated Short a Pilot for a Show?

Ratchet & Clank: Life of Pie quietly debuted on Canadian streaming service Crave late last night as reported on Reddit and ResetEra. This 23-minute episode was created by Mainframe Studios, the same company that created the Ratchet & Clank movie along with a number of classic kids shows such as Reboot and Beast Wars.

This show's debut came pretty much out of nowhere. Nothing leaked, and Mainframe Studios' own website doesn't yet list it as one of its projects. Crave hasn't tweeted about the release of this new show, either.

Here's the plot of this new Ratchet & Clank animated short as described by Crave:

While on an inter-galactic pizza run, Ratchet and Clank discover that the diabolical Dr. Nefarious has developed an interdimensional portal device that would allow him to rule the entire multiverse! The intrepid duo spring into action, liberating the "Portalizer" from Dr. Nefarious and then racing off to securely lock it away in a weapons museum. But along the way, they run into bumbling Captain Qwark, who uses the weapon to accidentally unleash a sentient-pizza-topping mob upon the citizens of Galactic City. It's up to Ratchet and Clank to battle the savory horde and keep the Portalizer out of Dr. Nefarious' evil hands before he uses it to destroy the galaxy!

One might wonder — is this a stealth pilot for a television series? It is 23 minutes long, making it perfect for fitting into a 30-minute television slot with commercials. Thus far, however, the plot of this short appears to serve as a prequel to the game, explaining the origins of the Portalizer gun that prominently features in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

Mainframe Studios certainly has the experience in making good TV for kids and the Ratchet & Clank series could do well as a weekly cartoon. For now, you can watch the animated short on Canada's Crave streaming service while we all wait for the upcoming release of Rift Apart.
