News coming out of EGX today as WhatCulture caught up with Rainbow Six Siege's art director Scott Mitchell. When asked about the game's single player component, he was quoted as saying that, "There is no story mode per se. You go through training, where you get to experience different operators and their devices. You can play against enemy AI in co-op through all the maps." He then described what people offline would be doing as a "training ground" for the online component. This contrasts with the game's marketing by Ubisoft so far, which featured several supposed cutscenes that indicated more than a simple botmatch option.
Ubisoft has responded to the reaction this quote has gotten by releasing this statement. "The creative vision for Rainbow Six Siege has always been strongly focused on a compelling cooperative and multiplayer experience. The game supports solo play when playing Terrorist Hunt offline & online and we will provide further details on single-player content in the near future." Perhaps there is something more planned, and perhaps there is a substantial single player mode that will be added in later so as not to delay the game into next year. However, it seems likely that the vast majority of gameplay for Rainbow Six Seige will be restricted to the game's online component.
Quick Take
Remember Evolve? The multiplayer only big budget shooter that came out earlier this year to a mostly indifferent audience. The game that was supposed to kick of a trend of these type of games, riding on the hype produced by Titanfall before its similarly disappointing release. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege has joined Star Wars Battlefront as the next pair of games to attempt to justify a full price tag on multiplayer alone. Battlefront might be able to succeed thanks both to its series history and its Star Wars theming. Siege will have a lot more to prove. Are you still looking into grabbing Rainbow Six Siege?
