In Fimbul, Ragnarok is nigh, and so is the game's launch - this Norse-inspired game launches on the Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC on February 28, 2019.

Developer Zaxis Games and publisher Wild River announced that their action-adventure game is coming this February. Players will take control of a berserker named Kveldulver, left to die after a bloody battle but revived by goddesses called Norns. Their hope is that he can stop Ragnarok from happening.

Ragnarok is a Norse apocalypse myth. Fimbulwinter is the winter that precedes Ragnarok, which is when Fimbul takes place and where it gets its name. Because of the game's mythological setting, Kveldulver fights against not just other human opponents, but frost giants called Jotunn and other monsters too. Different weapons and items will be obtainable along the way to aid Kveldulver in combat.

Fimbul also appears to have an emphasis on storytelling with player decisions, according to the press release:

Kveldulver’s story will depend on player decisions, with numerous narrative branches to uncover. As the Norns are the goddesses who spin the threads of fate, they have imbued Kveldulver with the power to go back to pivotal moments in his journey and explore different outcomes.
Lastly, the game has a self-described "gripping comic book style," with 3D, isometric graphics that add some depth to the depressing cold of a Scandinavian winter.

Fimbul launches February 28th for consoles and PC.

Quick Take

I am quite intrigued by this, being a fan of Norse mythology and anything relating to Vikings. I think that the comic-book art style was a good way to approach this since it takes place during winter. There's only so much you can do with that setting to make it look fresh, in my opinion. The Long Dark went with that cell-shaded look and it turned out nicely. Graphics aside, I'm intrigued by the story and the plot permutations, too.
