2020 was supposed to be a big year for Quake. It's the 25th anniversary of the twitch shooter franchise, and this year's QuakeCon was sure to be a blast. Unfortunately, the pandemic the world is fighting means that QuakeCon 2020 has been canceled.

"In recent weeks we have spent a lot of time discussing how we might still move forward with QuakeCon this year, particularly given that it's the 25th year of the event," read a statement on the convention's website. "However, with all of the logistical challenges and uncertainties we currently face due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s QuakeCon."

"While we don’t know what the state of the pandemic will be this August," the statement continued, "we do know it will not be possible to complete the work and planning with partners, vendors, volunteers, and others that is required to make QuakeCon a success."

Will QuakeCon 2020 Go Digital?

With the cancellation of QuakeCon 2020, one question remains: will they be producing some kind of digital experience for expectant fans? The good news is that it looks like they're working on cooking up something fun for us this August.

"We thank all of you – especially the volunteers – for all your work in building and supporting this event year after year," the statement continued. "We hope to work with you to come up with other ways to celebrate the spirit of QuakeCon this August, and we look forward to the return of this amazing event next year."

"Until then, be safe, look after each other, and play games."

While missing out on this year's QuakeCon will be disappointing to some, it's important that we all stay safe during these troubling times. Look forward to something coming from the QuakeCon creators, hopefully around the planned convention times in August 2020.
