Bethesda recently opened a limited Quake Champions test that allowed a small group of fans to play a free-to-play Early Access version. Beginning last Friday, a few prospective players had the opportunity to test out the beloved first-person shooter with a limited number of keys that were given away. Those keys went fast, and are long gone, so if you're in the majority of those who didn't have a chance to experience the action first-hand, we'll break down what you missed.

The free-to-play Early Access version of Quake Champions included all modes and maps, as well as one starter Champion: Ranger. All other Champions are available for individual purchase, and can otherwise be earned through some in-game grinding. The final release of the free-to-play model will be available later this year, but players will always have the option to upgrade to the paid version if they wish. This baseline free-to-play version will be perfect for players looking to test the waters, hone their competitive streaks, and begin customization of their favorite Champions.

The latest April update included a new Champion named Strogg. Veteran players will recognize him as the primary enemy from Quake II and Quake 4, who's half-metal, half-flesh, and entirely filled with rage. Players will have the ability to control his sidekick, Peeker, as well. He'll shoot explosives and float around as an airborne AI drone as you wish.

A new map called Awoken is also available and contains a landscape of tropical ruins. It'll be a viable option for Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch, Instagib, 2v2, and Duel.

Those familiar with Quake III Arena may rejoice as the infamous Plasma Gun has returned as a worthy installment. This powerful cannon will melt the foes who stand in your way, and release bursts of pure energy that will certainly bring a new kind of kick to the playing field.

The public test server included a daily rewards system that allows players to receive 200 platinum on their seventh day of play, meaning you can expect about that much each week if you log in daily.

Interested players can pick up the Early Access Champions Pack on Steam for $29.99 or the Scalebearer Pack for $4.99.
