A new psychological thriller game, titled Those Who Remain, is in development by indie studio Camel101.

Posting on the official PlayStation blog, Camel101 co-founder Ricardo Cesteiro announced the game, which will be released in 2018. Cesteiro also revealed a few details regarding story and gameplay mechanics.

Those Who Remain will be set in Dormont, a small fictional town in the US. According to Cesteiro, the town is "under a curse that has shrouded everything in darkness". Players must "stay in the light...light means safety, darkness equals death". In addition, it seems there will be a Stranger Things-style parallel dimension element to the setting, with "strange portals connecting our world to another dimension". Cesteiro himself describes his team as "huge Stranger Things fans" in a reply to a comment on the original blog post, so the homage is likely deliberate.

Story-wise, Those Who Remain will revolve around "a kid...a victim of bullying because she's different". Cesteiro is playing his cards close to his chest when it comes to narrative specifics. The protagonist finds himself in Dormont through "a series of unfortunate events" followed by "a series of bad choices". More details regarding the story will likely be revealed closer to the game's release date.

Details about exactly what form Those Who Remain will take in terms of gameplay are scant right now. The game's announcement trailer suggests it will be played in first-person. Replying to a comment on the blog post, Cesteiro was quick to distance Those Who Remain from "walking simulators", clarifying that a walking simulator "[isn't] what we're aiming for at all". Another commenter asked about the possibility of a VR experience for Those Who Remain, to which Cesteiro replied that VR "is not in our plans for now, but it's something that might happen in the future".
