PS4 release of Rise of the Tomb Raider will target 1080p/30fps

Rise of the Tomb Raider's PlayStation 4 release is targeting the traditional console standard of 1080p/30fps, with the publisher stating to VideoGamer.com that "anything beyond that is a bonus."

As VideoGamer.com pointed out, Square Enix stated much the same thing for 2014's Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition's PlayStation 4 release when asked about the title's framerate: "anything beyond 30fps is gravy." Said gravy was achieved for the PS4 release as it ran at 60fps, which doubled the 30fps of the Xbox One release. The developer that helped created that port, Nixxies Software, will also assist Crystal Dynamics for the Rise of the Tomb Raider port.

However, given that Rise of the Tomb Raider is a current-generation title, perhaps those looking for a similar bump in framerate may have to spring for the rumored PlayStation Neo release this year, or perhaps even purchase the Steam version if their PC is beefy enough.

For those PlayStation fans that have been patiently waiting for the next Lara Croft adventure, the PS4 release of Rise of the Tomb Raider is set to release on October 11th as the 20th year edition with all the DLC and some new additions.

Quick Take

The fact that Square Enix is continually hedging their bets by stating that their game is targeting 30fps is an excellent example for why this current console generation is struggling with performance. Keeping the prices of their consoles down to avoid another 599 US dollars scenario was a good idea, but the fact of the matter is that the PS4 and Xbox One are already having trouble keeping up with current games being released on their respective platforms. The release of the PlayStation Neo and the Xbox Scorpio seem to have the right idea of maximizing their hardware from the very start, and I think that the advent of new hardware is a sign of things to come, as the way we currently view console generations may soon very well be outdated.

A very unflattering picture of my tired face.
