Giant Sparrow made a wave with their first game a PS 3 exclusive (recently released on Vita and PS4), The Unfinished Swan. That was a game about exploration in an unknown world and it stood out by its unique take on the field and received critical acclaim for it. Now, they have announced their next project at this year's Playstation Experience - What Remains of Edith Finch.
Much like their first game, The Unfinished Swan, What Remains of Edith Finch will attempt to do something different, as you see what a wonderful tapestry the world is, and how quickly life can come to an end. In What Remains of Edith Finch you will play through a collection of short stories about a cursed family in Washington State, with the stories going from early 1900s to modern day. Edith Finch is trying to find out why she is the last Finch alive so you are exploring these stories of her family tree, and experience them in first person perspective.
In each story the tone and game play is different to match the particular character it is about. Each one of the stories is about a different Finch and their life. There are only two constants in the stories - first it will be played in first person perspective, and second it will end in the Finch's death.
With the wide range of characters and tones they have an ability to craft a unique narrative in What Remains of Edith Finch and tell a story that is difficult to do. Using the mystery of Edith looking into her family tree it provides both the context for the stories but also a narrative climax for them to build towards on a whole interacting as well as their own short stories.
What Remains of Edith Finch is going to come out in 2016, exclusively for the Playstation 4. It is going to be published by Sony Santa Monica, just as The Unfinished Swan was. You can see the trailer they showed at Playstation Experience Below:
