The upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has been delayed. It was originally due to launch in January next year, but will now instead hit PC and current-gen consoles in March.

What is the reason for this Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake delay?

This news comes to us via the official Ubisoft Czech Republic Facebook page. In a post on the page (handily translated by Reddit user NayamAmarshe), Ubisoft says that 2020 "was a year like no other", likely referencing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which has caused widespread delays and cancellations throughout the gaming industry. As such, the studio is delaying Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake until March 18th next year. Ubisoft says it believes this is the right decision "to ensure we deliver a game you like". Here's the text of NayamAmarshe's translation in full:

Greetings, Prince of Persia fans!

During our Ubisoft Forward digital conference, we proudly announced Prince's return from Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. We are excited to be able to put this game in your hands again as we retell the story of Prince and Farah in the amazing 11th century Persia. However, 2020 was a year like no other. Today we would like to inform you that we need more time to complete the game. With that, the release date of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has been moved to March 18, 2021. We believe this is the right decision to ensure we deliver a game you like.

Thank you for your patience and continued support of the Prince of Persia, and we hope you remain safe and healthy during this holiday season.

What can we expect from Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake?

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is, as the name suggests, a full remake of the 2003 platformer.

Ubisoft describes the upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake as a "full-scale remake for a new generation". It's an overhauled version of the original 2003 platformer with brand new presentation, controls, and combat. You'll be able to choose between new control mappings and original button assignments, too, so if you've got the nostalgia bug, you can mix the old with the new. Ubisoft also says the original 1989 Prince of Persia (or the 1992 Mac version of same) will be unlockable in the remake, and "more surprises await".

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake launches for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on March 18th, 2021.
