Prepare Your Wallets For The First Epic Games Store Sale

Yesterday a Fortnite MOTD leaked an announcement of the first Epic Games Store sale. You can see an archived screenshot of the announcement in the header image above. However, the sale isn't happening "right now" as it says, and even if you sign up for the two-factor authentication as they suggest you won't be able to get the $10 store credit yet. Epic Games posted a clarification about the leak on Twitter, explaining that the sale is in the works, but hasn't launched yet, so you should wait a few days for more details.

The storefront launch campaign so far has been very generous in the past six months, with about a dozen free games already given away, among them several great games such as Super Meat BoyThimbleweed ParkSubnauticaWhat Remains of Edith Finch, and The Witness. On May 1st, following strong sales, Epic announced that they intend to build a “new ecosystem for PC gaming,” which is a noble endeavor, though it has its share of controversy. Whether they will achieve this new ecosystem will depend partly on how they handle sales. We'll have to wait and see what they have planned in the next few weeks or so.

Quick Take

Say what you will about features, security, and exclusives, but most of us will agree that what really makes or breaks a great digital distribution platform is the sales. Many gamers, particularly those outside North America and Europe, only joined Steam because of its frequent and generous sales. Thousands of PC gamers who were previously proud pirates abandoned the black flag and became supporters of the industry. So if the Epic Games Store really wants to dethrone Steam, they will have to go big on sales. And it looks like they will, starting with the store credit offer, but let's hope there's even more than that.
