Pokemon TCG Pocket developer DeNA has revealed that the game has been making a staggering amount of money for the studio, single-handedly rescuing it from an otherwise gloomy-looking financial year.
In a notice released earlier today, DeNA said that it previously hadn't provided a financial forecast for the 2024-25 fiscal year due to "the difficulty of reasonably and accurately estimating the figures", but that "significant changes in financial results" are now expected.
DeNA goes on to say that while its results were expected to be weaker this year for various reasons, the release of Pokemon TCG Pocket in October has led to the expectation of a "year-on-year increase in full-year revenue and operating profit".
The studio goes on to say that while it's still difficult to estimate what the year's fiscal summary will look like, it now expects to have raked in more than 85 billion yen in virtual currency purchases (i.e. in-game spending) and over 25 billion yen in revenue between October and December.
If spending continues at this rate, then it's likely that DeNA will have a very successful few months ahead of it. I'm betting the studio is thanking its lucky stars that The Pokemon Company chose it to work on Pokemon TCG Pocket.
DeNA also reveals in its notice that Pokemon TCG Pocket has officially racked up over 60 million downloads worldwide, which is a pretty impressive number. Of course, many of those players won't spend a penny on the app, but it looks like a lot of people are handing over their cash for cards and other goodies.
As for Pokemon TCG Pocket itself, the app recently got itself an update in the form of the Mythical Island expansion set, which introduces over 80 new cards to collect and battle.
Future updates will also bring oft-requested features like trading, as well as other new features that DeNA and The Pokemon Company have yet to reveal.
You can check out Pokemon TCG Pocket right now on Android and iOS devices.
