Later this week, developer and publisher Niantic will release a new patch which will allow the first set of Mega Pokemon into Pokemon Go.

So let's get this out of the way: to start off with there will be four Mega Pokemon that will be added to the game, three of which are Kanto starters:

  • Mega Charizard X
  • Mega Venusaur
  • Mega Blastoise
  • Mega Beedrill

But what do they do? Well, once players gather Mega Energy in Mega Raids, a Mega Evolution can then be triggered for a limited amount of time, which makes the four Pokemon much more powerful and, well, Mega. The Mega Pokemon can be used to do pretty much anything you would want them to do, such as doing more raids, gyms, playing with friends, and beating up Team Go Rocket. However, you can't use them for several things such as defending gyms or in Go League Battles, although they can be set as your buddy if you want to dunk on your friends for being uncool enough not to have a Mega Pokemon as their buddy.

If you want to specifically look up the new Mega Pokemon, there's a new portion of the Pokédex that will allow players to track each species of Mega Pokemon, which is pretty cool. You can learn interesting tidbits such as that Shadow and Clone Pokemon will not be able to be Mega Evolved, which is useful information.

There's a whole bunch of things for players to look forward to next month. From September 1-7 trainers will fight in as Mega Raids that they can complete, September 11-17 will have players using their Mega Pokemon to compete in Team Rocket, gym, and trainer battles, and 22-28 September will have players completing different buddy tasks with their newly Mega-Evolved Pokemon in order to build up their friendship level.

What do you think of this news? Are you happy Mega Pokemon are finally in the game? Do you still play Pokemon Go? Let us know in the comments!
