During today's Pokemon Sword and Shield DLC presentation, Nintendo revealed that the long-awaited link between Pokemon Go and cloud storage service Pokemon Home is coming soon. This will let you transfer Pokemon you've caught from Go to Home, then send them from Home into Sword and Shield.
How will the Pokemon Go and Pokemon Home link work?
When you catch a Pokemon in Pokemon Go, you'll be able to send it to the Pokemon Home cloud storage service. Once it's there, you can transfer it from Home to Sword and Shield and use it within those games, as well as their expansion pass content. Nintendo does list three major caveats to this. Some Pokemon can't be transferred from Go to Home, although Nintendo doesn't say which ones. You can't return Pokemon from Home to Go, so it's a one-way trip. Finally, Nintendo says the Pokemon you want to transfer must either "be registered in the Pokedex" of Sword and Shield or must already have been obtained at least once in that game.
There are bonuses for transferring Pokemon between Go and Home. If you transfer a Pokemon, you'll be able to open a Mystery Box in Pokemon Go which will cause Meltan to appear within the world of the game. Naturally, that means you'll then be able to catch Meltan within Pokemon Go. In addition to this, you'll get a Mystery Gift in Pokemon Home. The gift contains a special Melmetal that is capable of Gigantamax transformation in Pokemon Sword and Shield. This gift will be sent to the mobile version of Pokemon Home, so you'll need that app to take advantage of the Melmetal. Nintendo also says a paid Pokemon Home subscription is required "to access certain features".
According to Nintendo, the link between Pokemon Go and Pokemon Home should be coming "within the year". Stay tuned for more information about this upcoming service.
