Pokemon GO Gets a Detective Pikachu Special Event

As the Pokemon: Detective Pikachu live-action adventure feature film hits theaters, Pokemon GO players can expect new in-game experiences as a tie-in add-on that will offer them more ways to immerse themselves in the Pokemon Universe, starting tomorrow, May 7, with the official United States release date for the movie set to May 10, and having premiered in Japan on May 3.

In collaboration with Niantic Labs, Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary, The Pokemon Company International, a division of Nintendo, announced a variety of in-game activities and content coming soon to Pokemon GO. Players will be able to catch a Pikachu wearing a detective hat once they get photobombed by the iconic Pokemon. There will also be other encounters with select Pokemon featured in the movie, as well as special Raid Battles, Field Research, and more.

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu has been a widely buzzed movie among fans and theatergoers for the past week or so, having premiered in other countries as well. Other markets throughout Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific will also follow. J.C. Smith, Senior Director of Consumer Marketing at The Pokemon Company International, raved about the event.

We’re excited for fans around the world to immerse themselves in the latest Pokémon adventure with ‘POKÉMON Detective Pikachu. We look forward to celebrating the first live-action film with fun new experiences in Pokemon GO.
There's an amount of limited time content that fans should be on the lookout for from May 7 through May 17:
  • Detective Hat Pikachu Photobomb: While in the GO Snapshot mode, fans have a chance to get photobombed by Pikachu wearing a detective hat, and then be able to catch it.
  • More Encounters with Pokemon Seen in the Movie: Pokemon such as Bulbasaur, Jigglypuff, Psyduck, Aipom, and Snubbull, among others, will appear more frequently in the game. You might also have opportunities to catch Shiny Aipom.
  • Special Raid Battles and Field Research: Players can participate in Raid Battles that challenge Pokemon that star in the movie, and also conduct Field Research.
  • New Avatar Items: Fans can customize their in-game avatars with movie-themed items, including the detective hat with Pikachu ears and a T-shirt featuring the Pokemon: Detective Pikachu logo.
