Sony has announced a new PlayStation Studios Mobile division, the formation of which is also coinciding with a brand new acquisition. The mobile business will operate outside of the console division and will focus on creating "on-the-go experiences" based on PlayStation properties.

What do we know about PlayStation Studios Mobile?

In an official announcement, Sony confirmed the creation of PlayStation Studios Mobile, along with the acquisition of mobile developer Savage Game Studios, which is yet to release its first title. Savage is apparently staffed by developers with "many years of mobile game development experience" across multiple successful IPs. It was founded by three industry vets, one of whom, Michael McManus, is a former Insomniac employee.

As VentureBeat reported back in 2021, Savage's first title will be a free-to-play co-op PvE shooter. It'll focus on "rewarding sessions without...high pressure" and will supposedly exist in contrast to the high-intensity shooters and battle royale games that currently make up the multiplayer market. It'll also be the team's first project for PlayStation Studios, naturally.

One of Savage Game Studios' co-founders is a former Insomniac employee, bringing him full circle back to PlayStation with this new acquisition.

Sony says Savage's day-to-day operations will continue to be run by the company's management, so there won't be any structural changes, even though the team will be part of PlayStation Studios Mobile. In addition, Sony reassures players that this won't mean any changes to the main PlayStation Studios division, nor does it mean anything for the upcoming slate of PC releases scheduled to land soon.

It's all go in the worlds of Sony and PlayStation right now. Despite a recent PS5 price hike in some regions, the console continues to sell well, and PlayStation VR 2 also now has a release window, so it won't be long before we get to try out that fancy new toy. Savage Game Studios is also just one of Sony's recent acquisitions, which also include Destiny 2 developer Bungie. There's also speculation that Sony could soon make a bid for Square Enix, possibly in an attempt to shore up its AAA clout in the same way that Microsoft did earlier this year with Activision Blizzard. We'll bring you more on this as soon as we get it.
