Sony has announced that global PlayStation 5 sales have surpassed 10 million units around the world, and that's not all — a number of games were highlighted as big successes, too.

This impressive PlayStation 5 sales milestone is certainly welcome news for Sony shareholders, but it may not be much comfort to gamers who are still struggling to get their hands on a console. Rest assured — Sony is still working hard to get more PS5s out to stores.

"While PS5 has reached more households faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for PS5 continues to outstrip supply," said Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan. "I want gamers to know that while we continue to face unique challenges throughout the world that affect our industry and many others, improving inventory levels remains a top priority for SIE."

Today's announcement also took care to highlight four games, in particular, that sold fairly well over the last several months. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales has moved 6.5 million units, meaning that 6 out of every 10 PS5 owners has a copy of the game. More recent releases haven't done all that bad, either; MLB The Show 21 has sold more than 2 million copies, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has sold more than 1.1 million copies, and Returnal has sold more than 560,000 copies.

PlayStation 5 Sales vs. Xbox Series X|S Sales Shows a Tremendous Lead for Sony

The PlayStation 5 sales milestone is pretty great, but how does it compare to Xbox Series X|S sales? Unfortunately for Microsoft fans, industry analyst estimates show that Sony likely has a commanding lead in the first year.

"We estimate that the Xbox Series X|S total [sell-in] was 6.5m as of June 30, 2021," Niko Partners Senior Analyst Daniel Ahmad said in a tweet. "Compared to our estimate of 5.7m for Xbox One and 5.0m for Xbox 360 in the same timeframe."

However, this battle is far from over. Ahmad notes that the Xbox Series X|S supply has greatly improved over the last quarter and Microsoft's hardware revenue is up 20% compared to the previous quarter. Combine that with the value proposition of Xbox Game Pass and the budget Xbox Series S console option and it's pretty clear that his battle is just getting started.
