It's long been speculated and hinted that a remake for Bioware's legendary Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was on the way. Now, we can breathe a sigh of relief as we have confirmation of the remake's existence.

During today's PlayStation Showcase 2021, the show opened with a bombshell announcement: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake is on the way as a PS5 console launch exclusive, as well as PC.

The presentation displayed a teaser shot of Darth Revan, the player character of Knights of the Old Republic. Players will once again take the reigns of this fan-favorite and carve their own destiny. Check out the trailer for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake below:

While Bioware developed the original game, Aspyr Media is taking the helm for this project. According to a post on PlayStation's blog, the team has many talented and experienced developers, some of which were on the team for the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. There is no definitive launch date, and based on a comment by Lead Producer Ryan Treadwell, it will take some time. He says:

So, what's next? Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake is a tremendous undertaking, encompassing almost every aspect of the original game. We're still early in development, but we're happy to finally have announced the remake and hear the PlayStation community’s thoughts on what you're excited to see.

We received some more information on an additional post on StarWars.com. This interview with the aforementioned Ryan Treadwell as well as Lucasfilm Games' Orion Kellog doesn't reveal too much about the game, but does detail the approach for the project. From the ground up, this will be a complete remake. One interesting tidbit is that this project was developed in collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment, hence the launch exclusivity. We also learned that the voice in the trailer above is none other than Jennifer Hale, voice of Bastila from the original game.

The post on StarWars.com also carries intriguing implications. Knights of the Old Republic was removed from canon lore after Disney's acquisition of the Star Wars IP. With a remake on the way, it certainly seems like Darth Revan and friends are legitimized.

For more information on the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake (or what we hope to see included), as well as the PlayStation Showcase 2021, stay tuned.
