PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS is reportedly working on a region lock system according to USgamer.
The source for the potentially upcoming region-locking comes via a post on the /u/PUBATTLEGROUNDS subreddit by /u/vinimino. The post translates information from the Korean dev log for the game which you can see in its original Korean here. The gist of the post is that they're working on a limited test of region locking for the game, although it won't be a hard lockout - players teaming up from different regions would still be able to play together. The overall idea would nonetheless be to segregate players based on their region of origin.
PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS had recently announced ping-based matchmaking is in the works. A more recent update talked about service interruptions and how the dev team is "looking into various measures that we could use to alleviate the issues players are experiencing in these regions", something that may be another hint towards region-locking. As usual, hundreds of "REGION LOCK CHINA" comments have flooded the news post; China is considered to be a source of a majority of the game's hackers by quite a few players in the community. Over 120 cheat makers were arrested in China earlier this year, and the developers have been hard at work at improving their anti-cheat systems.
Unfortunately, there's not much more in the way of details about whether region-locking is definitely going to be implemented or how long it will take. As far as we know for the moment, the Korean division of the development team is looking into the possibility and testing it in a limited fashion. We've reached out to the developers for more information and will update if we hear back from them.
