Play 2016

Every year Sony runs the Play program, which takes a handful of upcoming indie games, puts them on discount for preordering them, and rewards players who buy some. This year Sony is offering up four games and the possibility of getting a coupon for future purchases.

Each game in the Play 2016 program will be offered with a 20% discount for preordering if you're a PlayStation Plus member. Furthermore, each game will come with a static theme for your PlayStation 4, with the exception of Bound which has a dynamic one. Finally, if you preorder two of the games then bySeptember 6th you'll get a coupon, which is good until October 4th, that makes your next purchase on the PSN 20% off. The coupon has some limitations, the biggest being that it can only be used for PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 3 games. PlayStation Vita games are excluded, as are PlayStation TV and PlayStation Portable games. You also can't use it for pre-orders, PlayStation Plus memberships, PlayStation Now rentals, or PlayStation Music. You can read the full terms and conditions here. Now, what games will be available in this deal?

The first game is Headlander. Developed by Double Fine and published by Adult Swim Games, Headlander is a side-scrolling shooter where you play as a disembodied head that can take over robots. The game has an interesting 70's aesthetic and features a robotic utopia. Headlander will be available on 7/26 for $20, or $16 if you preorder, and will also be available on Steam.

Next up is Abzû.The game is an exploration game, focused on exploring an undersea environment. You'll be interacting with fish peacefully, and will get a chance to see caverns and coral reefs. Abzû is being developed by newcomers Giant Squid Studios and published by 505 Games. It will be available on 8/2 for $20, or $16 if preordered, and will also be available on Steam.

The third game is Brut@l, which is both developed and published by Stormcloud Games. Brut@l is a co-op dungeon crawler where you'll be exploring randomly generated dungeons to slay monsters and find treasure. The game uses an interesting art style where everything is made out of ASCII, and also features a dungeon creator for when you feel like being creative. Brut@l will be available on 8/9 for $15, or $12 if preordered, and appears to be coming to PC at a later date. You can read our E3 preview of the game here.

Last but not least is Bound, a 3D platformer developed by Plastic Studios and published by Sony Santa Monica Studio. Bound features a story about a woman reliving her childhood, and has the main character using various dance moves to traverse the environment. The game also features compatibility with PlayStation VR. Bound will be available on 8/16 for $20, or $16 if preordered, and is a PlayStation 4 exclusive.
