PopCap Vancouver has just announced that the sequel to their Plants vs. Zombies shooter spin-off, Garden Warfare 2, will be available in American stores on February 23rd of 2016, which is a lot earlier than the previously expected spring launch. European players able to join the chaos 2 days later.

The announcement says that Garden Warfare 2 will see players once again battle each other for domination as either plants or zombies. The game will see the return of a couple of fan-favorite modes, as well as new game modes, such as the 24-player Herbal Assault mode and the 4-player co-op Graveyard Ops mode. There will be 12 new maps (with one of them taking place on the moon) where people fight for dominance of Suburbia. Garden Warfare 2 will also feature a new mode called the Backyard Battleground, a sort of RPG-esque open world map where people can play daily quests, fight your enemies, and take part in dynamic events in solo or co-op.

PopCap has been working with Bioware to create the preorder bonus Grass Effect Z7 Mech, a Mass Effect style mech that has Bioware's space opera's iconic omni-tool (renamed the Zomni-tool), as well as the biotic "pull" ability. You can watch the trailer for the mech here. Players who preorder will also receive an emoji pack with 14 emojis with which they can customize their characters.

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 will be available only for current-gen consoles and PC.

Quick Take

When the first Garden Warfare got released, I was surprised by how much fun it was. I got it for free as one of the PS+ games earlier this year and before I knew it I was blasting zombies like the best of them. The franchise has come a very long way since the heady days of the tactical browser game, and the franchise has got quite a following behind it now. The preorder bonus might not be enough to persuade me to throw down my cash before release, but it is looking rather cool.
