One of the biggest gaming Kickstarters of all time is closing in on its Q1 2015 release date, and with that comes an opportunity to pre-order the game.
For those looking to pre-order Obsidian Entertainment's Pillars of Eternity, you can now do so here. Conveniently, starting today you can also buy the game for 10% off, along with some 'exclusive' items that will most likely (knowing the gaming industry) will become non-exclusive within a month or so of release.
The regular game or 'Heroic Edition' has a price-tag of $40, while the 'Champion Edition' of the game is going for $53, which offers a few extra goodies for those willing to take the plunge.
The game itself looks to be a return to the old style isometric RPG that many look back on with great fondness. With illustrious studios such as BioWare and Black Isle Studios, they produced classics such as Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Icewind Dale and most of all Planescape Torment. Many veterans from Black Isle Studios moved on to Obsidian Entertainment, and these veterans are looking to make a comeback to the genre that had treated them so well over a decade ago.
There are many reasons why the genre is held in such high regard so many years later. The stories told in these games are regularly cited as the best in the business. This holds true especially for Planescape Torment, a game that has had its in-game story reworked into an actual book as well as eventually spawning a successful Kickstarter.
The gameplay was also highly praised, with strategic combat that included the option to pause and issue orders to a party of heroes, who could be usually be customized according to however the player desired. Do you want a rogue that looks, acts, and sounds like a lumberjack? No problem! If you have an idea for a type of hero, you can most likely try it out in-game.
With games such as Wasteland 2, Divinity: Original Sin, and now Pillars of Eternity, the isometric RPG is experiencing a renaissance of sorts, which is definitely a good thing for an industry that has become increasingly homogenized.
