Griftlands is a fantastic game that merges card game mechanics with a turn-based role-playing game. This newest title from Klei has a distinct animated art style to compliment its intriguing hybrid gameplay.

Players can go into battle solo if they're kinda nuts, or they could elect to hire or otherwise convince people to help them out in a fight. The cards that are played determine your actions both in and out of battle. As an example, our hero tries to recruit someone in the trailer by using a card to talk to them. Unfortunately, they then head into battle woefully underprepared and get their butt kicked.

That is where things change: the second time around, the player uses their cards to get a lot more help in their battle. Now that they're set up with four people versus two, the player managed to win the fight handily. We got to see the "Uppercut" card in action which triggered a cinematic cutscene that instantly defeated the enemy. The game then seamlessly moved to an animation of the characters you were fighting slamming against a wall, unconscious.

Following the conclusion of the fight, the player character opened a door and found what appeared to be some kind of royalty being held hostage by a bunch of ne'er-do-wells. The player character shrugged and we subsequently got the title drop for Griftlands.

A Steam news post has some additional details about this reboot of what was once simply a turn-based RPG. In addition, the devs supplied an expected timeline for the game:

  • Alpha: The Sal campaign (days 1 through 4) is released
  • Fall: Character 2 campaign (days 1 through ?) is released
  • Early Access: Character 3 campaign (days 1 through ?) is released
  • Launch: Full campaign for all characters released
The Griftlands Alpha will be available July 11, 2019, on the Epic Games Store and Steam at a price of $14.99 or your regional equivalent. Check out the Griftlands trailer below to see what this game is like. You can also add the game to your wishlist on Steam.
