Today, Electronic Arts has pulled the plug on their spokesperson for NHL 16, Patrick Kane.

Last week, Kane was accused of raping a woman in her mid 20's in Hamburg, New York. The investigation is thus far ongoing, however current reports regarding the allegation from the press note that the woman and another female friend were invited to Kane's home from a bar, where Kane would allegedly overpower her and rape her.

Current reports also indicate the woman suffered several bite marks and a scratch along her leg, but no formal charges have been made against Kane. "At this time, we are gathering information and awaiting forensic testing results," stated Hamburg Police Chief Gregory Wickett. "We will have no further comment on this investigation at this time."

Kane was set to be one of two men on the cover, along with teammate Jonathan Toews, celebrating the Stanley Cup win of their team the Chicago Blackhawks. Electronic Arts today made a statement regarding the situation today.

In light of the ongoing investigation involving Patrick Kane, he will no longer be a spokesperson for the launch of EA Sports NHL 16. He will not appear on the EA Sports NHL 16 cover, nor participate in other EA SPORTS NHL 16 promotional activities."
Electronic Arts has also revised the cover, featuring Toews alone with the Stanley Cup.

This is the first time Electronic Arts has pulled the cover athlete off their box art this close to release. The only other removals for athletes in the past have been months later, such as Dany Heatley in 2003, due to a car crash that killed teammate Dan Snyder months after the games release. Tiger Wood was briefly removed from the cover of PGA Tour after his infidelity charges were confirmed, although the endorsement for Tiger Woods remained until the contract expired in 2014.
