Night School Studio has announced that its horror-inflected narrative adventure Oxenfree will be delisted from a major digital storefront next month, and we're not entirely sure why it's happening.
In an email, Night School says that Oxenfree will no longer be available to download on Itch.io starting from October 1st. This isn't one of those delistings where you can still download the game if you've bought it, either; on October 1st, Oxenfree is gone for good from Itch.io.
Naturally, if you've already downloaded the game files from Itch.io prior to that point, you will still be able to play the game; Itch.io isn't going to hack into your storage drive and delete the game, so don't worry on that front.
Night School says it "deeply appreciates" the support from everyone who's played Oxenfree over the years, and that it hopes to "see you on another service or timeline soon".
Presumably, that means Oxenfree isn't about to be delisted from other platforms on which it's currently available, like Steam or GOG, not to mention console storefronts like the PlayStation Store or the Nintendo eShop.
I'm assuming that if Oxenfree was about to get delisted elsewhere, Night School would have been a bit more forthcoming about that, but it might just have slipped the studio's mind. You never know!
In any case, we've reached out to Night School for clarification on this issue and will report back as soon as we hear anything.
If you need reminding, Oxenfree is a narrative horror adventure about a group of teenagers who journey to a local island for a weekend trip and encounter strange supernatural happenings.
Light on gameplay and heavy on story, Oxenfree is all about making branching narrative decisions, uncovering the relationships between its characters, and generally vibing with the atmosphere.
Oxenfree is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, and it's also playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S via backwards compatibility. The sequel, Oxenfree 2, is also available on PC, PlayStation, and Switch, and you can read our review of it here.
