Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan has said that the team has been working on multiple maps for Overwatch. Some of these will see the light of day in 2017, while others are still too early into development to say a release date with any sort of certainty. This news comes from a post on the official Overwatch forums expressing concern about the slow implementation of new maps to the game’s map pool.

Overwatch's anniversary is almost here... just a month away now. And it concerns me that they only released two maps in one year span.

I remember Jeff saying they were working on a few maps last year (around Nov or December) but so far we've only seen 1 new map this year. With anniversary just around the corner and about half of this year already passed... are we just going to get 1 new map? or if any at all?”

It’s a valid concern to have since players have mostly gotten new cosmetic items like skins in addition to unique maps for specific events, but none of these event maps stick around after an event has concluded. Since the game’s release last year, a grand total of one new permanent map has been added to the rotation, leaving some players feeling disappointed. Jeff Kaplan decided to join in on the discussion, revealing some things that are, at the very least, reassuring to players wanting new permanent maps.

We currently have 3 maps in development, all past the initial playtesting phase that are "standard" maps (QP/Comp). While something could always change, all 3 of those are looking likely for a release this year.

We also have 3 non-standard maps in development (these won't go in QP/Comp).

We also have a few other experiments going on.

Hopefully this will satisfy some of what you're looking for. We want to play on these maps as badly as you guys do. We'll work as fast as we can!

What these maps are, what they’re going to look like and, most importantly, how these maps will fit into the lore is anyone’s guess at this point, but knowing that three of those maps are already very far in development might mean that we’ll get our first sneak peek before long.

What are your hopes for new maps? Would you like to see specific locations? Let us know in the comment section down below!

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
