It's a day a lot of players have been waiting for - Overwatch has finally revealed Doomfist who was teased just a few days ago. Two separate videos - a Developer Update and an anime-esque Origin Story trailer - have been released, detailing the character and his mechanics. Doomfist's character page is up, and if you want to see what he plays like you can do so right now on the PTR. For now, let's take a peek at the Origin Story trailer:

In this trailer, we see Doomfist punching a concrete wall (ostensibly that of a prison cell) before walking out through a hole he made. The scene of him punching through the wall is interspersed with a battle between himself and members of Overwatch, namely Winston, Tracer, and Genji. The video is done in an anime-esque style and shows just how frighteningly powerful Doomfist can be in his element. Although story abilities and in-game abilities do not necessarily line up, the story version of Doomfist was able to stand toe-to-toe with three of Overwatch's best agents and swat them away like they were flies.

Doomfist hails from Nigeria and is a primary member of Talon, the organization that currently stands as the most serious opposition to the remnants of Overwatch and the forces of good in the world. Doomfist has a very Darwinian worldview, believing that humans will get stronger solely through conflict. This belief of his would put Overwatch (a peacekeeping organization) and Doomfist strongly at odds with one another.

Doomfist will be in the Offense category and it seems that he will be a tough character with a lot of potential for mobility. This doesn't mean that he'll be a squishy character, either; his abilities will allow him to jump into the fray and take on a ton of punishment as long as he is doing damage. The philosophy behind his design is discussed in detail by Jeff Kaplan in the Developer Update:

Doomfist's left click primary attack is a shotgun-like ability with four shots in the magazine. No reloading is needed - your ammo recharges over time. His right click ability allows you to charge up a dash punch with the titular Doomfist (that is, the big honking battle gauntlet on his right arm); it has the same cooldown regardless of how much you charge it. His E ability is much like a shorter, less powerful versions of Winston's jump that cracks the ground in front of you. His Shift ability is an uppercut that will pop enemies in front of him into the air.

Aside from these direct abilities, his passive ability is "The Best Defense...". It generates temporary shields for Doomfist when he deals damage with his abilities. This passive (in concert with his other abilities) will likely make him an ideal character for charging into the enemy team and disrupting their positioning while maintaining survivability.

Finally, the big shebang - his ultimate, Meteor Strike, is like an orbital ion cannon of death. Doomfist leaps straight up into the air (off camera, in fact!) and you are presented with a targeting reticule. You have a few seconds to decide where to land before you come crashing down to deal area of effect damage.

At the time of writing, there are four choices for playing on the PTR: Quick Play, No Limits (meaning you can pick any character, even if someone else has already picked them), 6v6 Doomfist Elimination (which is, I imagine, six Doomfists versus six Doomfists), and the old-style Server Browser which lets you create a game. Unfortunately, Quick Play and Arcade seem to be terribly overburdened right now; I had to hop onto a solo custom game to get a feel for the character.

As noted on the /r/Overwatch subreddit, today is the one-year anniversary of the first teaser being released for Ana. It's been over two and a half years since Doomfist's name was but a mention in the game's original Cinematic Trailer, and after a few weeks of testing Doomfist will enter the game proper. For now, interested PC players can brave the PTR queues and server hiccups to give the new guy a spin for themselves.

Now that he has finally been revealed, what do you think of Doomfist? Does the character live up to your expectations for something that players have been waiting for since before the release of the game? Which hero do you think will be revealed next? Let us know in the comments below!
