Outriders crossplay and a free next-gen upgrade are two new features announced for Square Enix's upcoming game, but it's not all good news: the Outriders release date has been delayed to 2021.
If you haven't been following Outriders, you've been missing out on a game that promises a "massive experience" with its campaign. The developers announced that an Outriders PS5 and Xbox Series X version was in development earlier this year, but it later came to light that this upcoming game might face a delay.
Now, Square Enix has confirmed that the Outriders release date has indeed been delayed. While this may be disappointing to some, today's announcement also came with the happy news that Outriders crossplay will support all six platforms and that console players can get a free next-gen upgrade for the game.

How Will Outriders Crossplay Work?
Details are light on how Outriders crossplay will work, but it seems to be a somewhat straightforward proposition going by what the publisher has said in today's announcement.
"Outriders will feature full cross-play compatibility across all formats, meaning players across PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Stadia will be able to play together regardless of what platform they are on," read today's press release.
How Does the Outriders Next-Gen Upgrade Work?
The Outriders next-gen upgrade will work similarly to how other games are handling upgrades from PS4 to PS5 and Xbox One to Xbox Series X.
Xbox players will be able to transfer their copy of the game from the Xbox One to the Xbox Series X using the Smart Delivery feature. PlayStation gamers who purchase an Outriders PS4 disc, however, will need a PS5 with a disc drive in order to upgrade to the next-gen version.
When is the Outriders Release Date?
The new Outriders release date will be February 2, 2021. While the delay was somewhat expected, Square Enix External Studios has finally confirmed it — and they certainly have an understandable reason for making us wait.
"We’re taking a little bit longer to ensure players have the best possible experience with Outriders, we’re also including new features like Cross-Play which will make our game much more accessible on all platforms," said Square Enix External Studios' Co-Head Lee Singleton in a press release.
You'll be able to play Outriders on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Google Stadia when it launches on February 2, 2021. You can pre-order Outriders for the PC and current-gen consoles via the game's official website.
