Valkyria Chronicles has had a very strange road. The first game was a critical success but a commercial disappointment on the PlayStation 3, but two sequels were released on the PlayStation Portable, although Valkyria Chronicles 3 was never released outside of Japan. The series was then put on hold until the re-release of Valkyrie Chronicles on PC managed to be a commercial success, owned now by nearly a million people. This would lead to a remaster of the first game for PlayStation 4 with updated graphics. Now, the series continues with a new game on the PlayStation 4.
However, Valkyria Revolution is much different from earlier entries in the series. For one thing, it's a fast-paced Action-RPG compared to the more methodical turn-based combat of its predecessors, and it focuses more on the 'cool' fantasy gameplay of the world then Valkyria Chronicles' more strategic gameplay. That fact alone has had fans of the series questioning the titles' place, but there is a method to their madness.
Media.Vision, the developers of the franchise, see Valkyria Revolution not as a successor to Valkyria Chronicles, but more as a combined IP within the setting of Europa, with the two IP's ultimately tied together as a 'War Drama'. This is something that the development teams think will remain constant in the franchise's future. Producer Youichi Shimosato has stated that the Valkyria Chronicles series has not ended. The team compares the combination of Valkyria Chronicles and Valkyria Revolution to the relationship between Shin Megami Tensei and Persona.
Overall, perhaps this quote from Dualshockers (who translated the Japanese PlayStation Blog post) explains it best:
While Valkyria Chronicles, as a strategy RPG, is a game like baseball, where no matter how well you play, the enemy turn will always come, they wanted Valkyria Revolution to be more like soccer, in which a player who plays well will keep pushing and dominating the battlefield.Valkyria Revolution is due to be released Q2 2017 on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the PlayStation Vita.
