Open Source Virtual Reality (OSVR), the open source virtual reality SDK (and accompanying headsets), has been integrated into Steam. The details of the integration were reported by Gamespot prior to its release.

Open Source Virtual Reality is exactly what it says on the tin - an ecosystem for virtual reality games with a commitment to an open source mindset. It's intended to stymie the hardware lock-in that is already happening with the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, and any other forthcoming VR headsets. Although some games feature support for multiple headsets, a cursory search of Steam's VR category will show that many games are limited to a single headset.

OSVR is centered around a software development kit, or SDK, that allows game developers to integrate their game with any OSVR-compatible headset. The company has a long list of supporters in both the games industry and academia.

OSVR makes it easy for game developers to support hundreds of devices and for hardware vendors to tap into top-notch content,” says Yuval Boger, CEO of Sensics. “OSVR content on Steam makes it easier than ever to distribute and obtain OSVR-compatible content.
OSVR isn't just about software; they also have compatible hardware that works with their platform. Consumers have a single option available to them, the Vuzix iWear. Developers can purchase one of two hardware development kits direct from the company or an Oculus Rift. Earlier this year, OSVR launched a developer fund with the goal of investing in game developers that could commit to creating open source virtual reality titles.

If you're curious to see what's available, you can take a look at what's currently supported by OSVR on the Steam store right now. At the time of writing, over 250 titles are currently supported by the SDK on Steam.

What do you think of Open Source Virtual Reality coming to Steam? Do you think adding OSVR to the mix will be good for the store's ecosystem? What's your preferred virtual reality headset? Let us know in the comments below!
