In 2013 we saw the launch of Disney Infinity: Disney's answer to Skylanders and the growing interest in toys-to-life video games. In 2014 they followed it up with Disney Infinity 2.0 which added Marvel characters to the mix. Then in 2015 we got Disney Infinity 3.0 which added in Star Wars characters. Yet it seems Disney will be skipping a new Disney Infinity game for 2016.

That's not to say nothing is coming at all though. Instead Disney has chosen to double down on creating new content for Disney Infinity 3.0. For starters characters Nick and Judy from the recently released Zootopia have just hit the shelves, and a figure based on Jungle Book's Baloo will release when The Jungle Book's remake comes out next month. Disney has also promised more classic Disney characters in the future.

More importantly we have the upcoming Marvel Battlegrounds Play Set. With an original story written by Marvel writers, and developed by United Front Games (the developers behind Sleeping Dogs), this Play Set seeks to provide a wealth of new content. One of the most interesting features is that every single Marvel character that has been released since Disney Infinity 2.0 came out will be compatible in this campaign. The Marvel Battlegrounds campaign will also be the first to allow four player co-op. Furthermore three new characters will be arriving: Ant-Man, Vision, and Black Panther will be added to the ever growing roster of playable characters with a promise of more to come. Disney is also releasing Black Suit Spider-Man to be purchased individually (originally this character was only available bundled with Disney Infinity 2.0 for the PlayStation Vita). Disney has also promised three more Play Sets in 2016 based on their various properties.

Yet all of this requires ignoring a bit of a dark spot with Disney Infinity. Sales for the series have been in decline and one has to wonder if the focus on dragging out the current entry rather than pushing for a new one is due to this. Disney isn't the only one with a problem: Activision Blizzard also announced that Skylanders: SuperChargers did not meet expectations and have laid off some of the staff involved with the game. The toys-to-life field continues to grow more crowded: 2014 saw Nintendo join in with Amiibos, while 2015 had Warner Brothers get involved with Lego Dimensions.

The Marvels Battleground Play Set releases March 14th for $29.99.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think the poor sales of Disney Infinity 3.0 and other toy-to-life games have something to do with it? Or is Disney really listening to the fans and focusing on expanding their current games? Let us know in the comments!
