Despite rumors and whispers to the contrary, Armored Core 6 isn't a Soulslike title. Instead, it's an Armored Core title, which has been in the works since at least 2016. Given that it's been over a decade and two console generations since Armored Core 5, you'd be forgiven for not knowing what Armored Core is. Basically, it's a fast-paced mech action title that will allow players to "assemble and pilot their own mech" while making use of everything that FromSoftware has learned over the past decade.
What does that mean? Well, in an interview with IGN, Hidetaka Miyazaki stated that the company went back and took a look at "the core concept of Armored Core and what made that series special." That resulted in two, foundational concepts: being able to assemble and customize your mech while exhibiting "a high level of control" over that mech. It seems that besides those two foundational concepts, everything else was seemingly on the table to be re-examined and re-developed.
Despite its title, the recently announced Armored Core 6 is a reboot of the series and should reflect the tropes that From Software has helped usher in with its Soulsborne games (although in the IGN interview, Miyazaki points out he's been working with those tropes since before Demon's Souls).
That doesn't mean that you're going to be a Hollow and swing a sword, but you can expect a feeling of familiar weighty combat along with a sense of mystery, exploration, and darkness, which at this point makes up the DNA that FromSoftware has implemented into its titles (and will likely continue to do so). Basically, it's a From Software title, but with a different flavor that you probably haven't experienced before.
Armored Core 6 is set on a remote planet after an apocalyptic scenario that has turned the planet, Rubicon 3, into a firestorm that's engulfed the planet and surrounding stars in both flames and storms. Miyazaki attributes From Software's love of post-apocalyptic settings to a "lively bright setting" being "beyond From Software's capability or experiences as a developer"; it's easier for the studio to stick to what it's good at, says Miyazaki.
The game will also have a versus mode like other Armored Core titles, although more details will arrive at a later date and closer to Armored Core 6's release, for which we don't have a date yet.
