Nioh 2 Closed Alpha Announced For This Week

If you were hankering for some Nioh 2 news you'll be happy to know the sequel to the samurai action RPG hack-and-slasher is getting a closed alpha later this week, starting on May 24, as announced by PlayStation Europe with the Closed Alpha YouTube video below. The alpha will go for a little over a week until June 2. There's no information on whether the alpha period applies to other regions or just Europe and North America.

Nioh 2 was first announced on E3 2018 during Sony's conference. No release window was shared then, and that remains the same. Nioh was originally released for both PlayStation 4 at the beginning of 2017 and for Microsoft Windows by the end of the same year. The sequel will likely follow a similar release schedule. Our review of Nioh: Complete Edition was very positive.

The Closed Alpha teaser was the first significant gameplay footage of the sequel, and fans seem satisfied with the art direction the game is taking. The combat seems similar to the original, but there's a new style overall that is sure to please fans. You can also see some of the enemies you'll be facing in the game, and the enemy design seems like a step-up from the original.

Following our coverage of the E3 reveal, we reported on more information available about the game, which will include a character creator and allow for more prominent RPG elements. That's unexpected, as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (Our Review) was actually more of an action-adventure samurai game, not following FromSoftware's pattern of action RPGs such as Dark Souls and Bloodborne.

Nioh 2 will probably release first on PlayStation 4, though a release window is still not available.
