In a move that can only be deemed as 'better late then never', Nintendo has finally altered their stance on tying a users' online library to their account rather then to an individual console.

While in theory the old system worked, in practice if one's system was damaged, stolen, or broken in any particular way, a user could (and in fact many did) lose their entire online library of purchased titles on the Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and the Nintendo Wii.

But with the advent of the Nintendo Switch, online purchases on Nintendo's online store are now tied to the account, which is a very good thing. This information was found in YouTuber FloKO's unboxing video, which includes the following statement:

"Your Nintendo Account contains your Nintendo eShop purchase history and current balance. By re-linking your Nintendo Account after initializing the console, it will be possible to redownload any software or DLC purchased using that account. (Software that has been discontinued may not be available to redownload in some cases.)"
While in the end it is a small feature, it's also one that has been included with pretty much every console and online store since 2006. With Nintendo's advertising touting how portable the Nintendo Switch is, this is something that will avoid a lot of frustration with Nintendo's loyal fanbase, which is something that they will no doubt appreciate.

Quick Take:

Thank the gaming gods. While it literally took Nintendo over a decade in order to make this change, I am very happy that it actually took place, as it would have been hilarious in all the wrong ways if Nintendo released another console without this basic feature. With this finally feature finally being checked off, does this mean Nintendo is starting to listen to online criticism? Well in that case, there is a certain franchise coughMetroidcough that could really use a new title Nintendo...
