Two separate pieces of news regarding the Nintendo Switch came out today. First, Eurogamer has reported, thanks to a number of different sources, some of the Switch's specs regarding the system's screen. Second, Nintendo announced today through a press release that they will be hosting a presentation all about the Switch on Jan. 12th, 2017.
Nintendo Switch Specs and Touchscreen
When Nintendo announced the Switch about a week ago, I think it's safe to say the gaming community felt a mix of emotions, both good and bad. However, I think we can all agree on one thing concerning the newly announced console-handheld hybrid; we still don't know much about the Switch and we need more info.Thanks to Eurogamer and their various sources, we now know a lot more about the Switch than we did before, assuming it's accurate.
The screen itself is 6.2'' in size and its resolution is 720p. These specs match up exactly with what Emily Rogers reported in early September, back when the system was still being referred to as the Nintendo NX.
Eurogamer also said that their sources told them that the Nintendo Switch does, in fact, have touchscreen capabilities. The Switch's screen boasts a capacitive multi-touch screen.
So, what does this mean? Well, having capacitive touchscreen means that the Switch doesn't rely on exerted pressure to pick up a user's touch like the WiiU and 3DS. Instead, the screen uses the electrical properties of your finger to detect where the user is touching the screen, which is a much more precise form of touchscreen.
Second, the report that the Nintendo Switch is a 10-point multi-touch display, according to Eurogamer, means that multi-finger gestures will be supported on the Switch. The Wii U and 3DS use single-touch display screens, in comparison.
Well, assuming that all of this is true, then how will touchscreen work when the Switch is docked? The answer is in the controllers. The Joy-Con controller that connects to the right side of the Switch reportedly contains an IR sensor, not unlike the sensor at the very top of the original Wii controller. The IR sensor on the Joy-Con can then be received by another IR sensor on the Switch's dock, again, much like the Wii's sensor. This allows you to perform touchscreen-like commands without having to actually hold the Switch.
Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017
Nintendo officially announced today that we can expect "major details" concerning the Nintendo Switch on Jan. 12th of next year. Nintendo will be holding a presentation all about the Switch on this date, and the conference will be live streamed for all to see.Some of the things that Nintendo has confirmed will be revealed at the event include the Switch's exact launch date (we know that the Switch will be released sometime in March 2017), as well as pricing for the Switch. While we don't yet know the exact price of the system, it was reported yesterday that the Switch won't be sold as a lost. Nintendo added that the presentation will also highlight some of the games currently in development for the Switch.
The event will take place in Tokyo and the exact time of the event will be announced at a later date.
