During a presentation at GDC 2018 in San Francisco Nintendo revealed the 10 best-selling indie games on the platform. The list, in no particular order, is as follows:
- Golf Story
- SteamWorld Dig 2
- Stardew Valley
- Enter the Gungeon
- Kamiko
- Fast RMX
- Overcooked Special Edition
- NBA Playgrounds
- Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
- Celeste
The most notable thing about this list is the absence of some larger titles like Rocket League, instead consisting of titles like Kamiko and Fast RMX. The Nintendo Switch has been very well received by gamers and developers alike. Many games have reportedly sold much better on the console/handheld hybrid, leading more and more indies to make the jump. There are also titles on the list that released fairly recently, like Celeste, which released January this year, meaning that they have managed to beat games which have had much longer on the market. The list is made using units sold rather than revenue generated.
Eurogamer reports that Senior manager for publisher and developer relations Damon Baker addressed some of the criticism which has been leveled at the Nintendo Switch eShop's discoverability functions, stating "We've heard the feedback from yourselves, from fans, loud and clear, about the limitations of the Nintendo eShop". He continued "I can assure you steps are being taken over the course of the year to improve the functionality in terms of discoverability and visibility, to highlight all of that great content."
Nintendo revealed the list at GDC 2018, the world's largest professional game industry event in which game developers, publishers, and industry experts share knowledge, insights, and network. The show usually sees a handful of announcements, including tech and gaming developments.
Nintendo's last Nindies Showcase was held yesterday, and featured announcements and detailing of several indie titles such as The Messenger, Banner Saga 3 and Light Fall. Cult PC adventure game West of Loathing was also announced, as well as a remaster of the puzzle game Lumines.
