NieR, the predecessor to NieR: Automata, is being reprinted for PS3 in Europe as reported by Gamespot.

NieR is an action RPG developed by the now-defunct Cavia for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game had an interesting take on a multi-platform release: the Xbox 360 version (titled NieR Gestalt in Japan) was the standard game and the PS3 version (titled NieR Replicant in Japan) featured a younger main character. Depending on the version, players would either control a middle-aged or teenaged version of the titular Nier, a man who is searching for the cure to an illness known as the Black Scrawl.

The game was a spin-off of the Drakengard series of JRPGs and expanded on the fifth ending of the first game. Plans for a PlayStation Vita version that combined elements from both console editions were scrapped in March 2011. Seven years after the release of NieRNieR: Automata took up the mantle of the story in a setting thousands of years after the original game.

The reprinting of the original is likely due to the success of NieR: Automata. While the first game did moderately okay in sales and reviews, Automata has been a much bigger success by all metrics with an 89 on Opencritic and an 88 on Metacritic. The sequel has sold over a million copies and has 229,587 owners (±13,851) on Steam according to Steam Spy.

You can be put on a waiting list for the reprinted PlayStation 3 version of NieR by heading over to Square Enix's European website. The reprint is priced at €29.99. As for its sequel, you can see what we thought of the game by checking out review.

Did you get the chance to play NieR when it originally released? Has your experiences with NieR: Automata made you interested in the game that came before it? Do you think that the original game should get a PC port? Do you want to see it re-released in other regions? Let us know in the comments below!
