PlatinumGames announced that action RPG Nier: Automata crossed four million lifetime sales, easily making it their best-selling title. The announcement via the PlatinumGames blog also comes with a whole litany of comments and artwork by their staff. Game designers Takahisa Taura and Hideki Kamiya provided a short video in which they thank the fans for "keeping the lights on" at Platinum, as well as provide a humorous look at their staff. News of Nier: Automata's success comes roughly two and a half years since its original release and almost two years since it hit two million sales. With E3 right around the corner, we might see Taura's next project, Astral Chain, make an appearance soon.

Set on Earth in a far-flung future where robots have taken control of the planet, you control a pair of androids created by humans in order to take control of the planet back. Blending together action-RPG action along with numerous other game genres, Nier: Automata garnered wide praise upon its initial release for its story and writing, as well as the creative use of video games as a medium itself. Originally released on the PS4, it came to the PC shortly thereafter, and to the Xbox One much later. There's no word on a Switch version, though considering the few complaints were concerned with technical problems (especially on PC), it might never come to the console.

Developed in conjunction with Square Enix, under direction from Yoko Taro, Nier: Automata becoming as much of a hit as it was certainly was a surprise for Platinum. Known largely for making niche action games like Bayonetta, Wonderful 101 and Vanquish, the unexpected partnership clearly bore great results for the studio. A sequel to the stubbornly frustrating original Nier certainly doesn't sound like a smash hit, but Nier: Automata's fantastic story supported by the best gameplay Yoko Taro has ever worked with produced excellent results. Yoko Taro has not revealed his next project, which might come with Square Enix at E3. Either way, Platinum will be back before long.
