The multiplayer tug-of-war fencing series is coming back this 2017. Nighogg 2 looks to improve upon the original while staying true to what made the original Nidhogg such a sleeper hit back in 2014.
While the core mechanics of Nighogg 2 will remain the same, plenty of new features are coming to the sequel. Among these new features are:
- Overhauled environments and animations
- 10+ levels
- A single-player campaign where you battle AI oponents
- Brand new music
- New weapons
There's plenty to learn just from the teaser alone. Firstly, the art style is completely different. The development team over at Messhof seems to have ditched the old minimalist yet vibrant art style of the original Nidhogg for a more detailed pixel art-esque art style. The design of the characters themselves is completely different from the original.
Another thing to take away from this teaser is the diversity of the weapons seen. While the original Nidhogg focused entirely on sword combat and hand-to-hand combat, Nidhogg 2 incorporates a wide array of weapons. Axes, bows and arrows, and daggers all make an appearance in the teaser.
As for the specifics of the release, we don't yet have much to go on. Nighogg 2 is coming "to PC and maybe some other platforms," according to the developers. So, expect the sequel to possibly come to consoles. The original Nidhogg eventually made its way to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita after its initial PC launch.
For now the release window for Nidhogg is just sometime in 2017. Expect to learn more about the game in the future. Nidhogg 2 will be making its first public appearance at TwitchCon, which takes place from September 30 to October 2.
