The next Need for Speed game is reportedly on track to launch later this year, but not everyone can play it -- there won't be a PS4 or Xbox One version of this new racing game.

Things have been a little rough for the Need for Speed franchise lately. The newest game on the market is 2020's Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered and a bunch of older NFS games were removed from digital storefronts last year. Adding to the pain is the news that the next entry in the Need for Speed franchise would be delayed early last year. Now, a new report says that it won't be coming to PS4 or Xbox One.

What We Know About the Next Need For Speed Game

As VGC reports, Giantbomb and Venturebeat's Jeff Grubb talked about the next Need for Speed game on the latest episode of his Grubbsnax show. The good news is that it looks like it's on track to come out later this year. The bad news, however, is that it will be exclusive to current-gen consoles -- that means PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.

"Need for Speed is still coming this year… that’s true, that game should be coming in November," Grubb said according to VGC. "If you are a Need for Speed fan who has bought a next-gen console, here’s some news; it’s next-gen only. They are shifting to next-gen only."

EA tends to launch its games as widely as possible and dropping the older consoles this early seems like a bit of an unusual move, especially considering that the new generation of consoles is relatively young. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only launched around one and a half years ago and it's still difficult to actually get them in some markets, so it seems like this might limit the reach of the new game.

Another unanswered question is whether or not 2022's entry will be coming to the Nintendo Switch. If the last-gen version was dropped due to technical or graphical limitations, the Nintendo Switch might not be able to keep up with the requirements of current-gen graphics.

As always, take such reports with a grain of salt until there's an official announcement; we've reached out to EA for comment on this story and will update this article when we receive a reply. For now, you can check out the handful of Need for Speed games that are still supported on the franchise's official website.
